Prof Alex Loukas
Alex Loukas is a professorial research fellow at James Cook University in Cairns and NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow. His research interests focus on the molecular basis of host-parasite relationships, with a particular emphasis on the secretomes of parasitic helminths that infect humans. The Loukas group uses cutting-edge discovery techniques to identify secreted parasite molecules that can be translated into (i) subunit anti-helminth vaccines; (ii) novel platform of anti-inflammatory biologics for treating autoimmune and allergic diseases. Vaccines antigens for human hookworm disease and schistosomiasis that were discovered in the Loukas lab are in clinical trials in developing countries, and anti-inflammatory hookworm protein biologics discovered in his lab are in pre-clinical development in partnership with pharma.
